Alternative Media Filters

Document ID:

While sand filters, in its various configurations, are one of the many traditional technologies employed in decentralized systems, the use of alternative filtration media (e.g., crushed glass, recycled media, synthetic foam, and peat) has provided additional options to improve effluent quality.

These types of filtration media operate in the same way as sand filters in treating wastewater. The water flows through the sand, trapping debris as it travels to the bottom of the filter and until it goes out. In some cases, it was shown that the treatment efficiency of the filter was enhanced or the loading rate achieved doubled compared with traditional sand filters.
